LUCIFER'S LAMENT
Act I, Scene 1. The Celestial Court. Enter LUCIFER, MICHAEL, and GABRIEL, (winged and clad in flowing samite garments) as well as a host of lesser ANGELS, within an Olympian realm where perfection reigns. The Earth can be seen far below these paradisiacal heights, a serene mix of blue and green. LUCIFER (addressing the masses) Hear me, ye wingèd emissaries all, Whose service binds ye to yon godly Throne: Why do we cast our gaze below, to Earth, And not aspire to realms yet higher, beyond? Is not the essence of our very being To seek, to strive, to grasp for greater heights? Yet here we stand, attendants at a court Where no ambition stirs, save to obey! MICHAEL Bold Lucifer, brightest among us birthed— Thy words, though honeyed, drip with veiled dissent! Is it for angels to question the design Laid forth by He who crafted both the stars And the dark spaces lying in-between? Our duty is to serve— not to aspire Beyond the will of our eternal King.
